During our Advent-Epiphany worship services, the practice of lighting candles and singing as an act of prayer proved popular. We were surprised at how many children, youth, and adults went forward during the congregational prayer to light candles—about 50 people each Sunday. This way of praying involves the vocal, visual, and verbal, as well as our bodies and hands.

Through the spring, we propose to continue this practice on the first Sunday of each month and then evaluate it again around May. On other Sundays of the month, a deacon or pastor will lead a spoken congregational prayer as usual. If you have thoughts about this proposal, talk to a member of the Worship Commission (Jenny Hooley, Michael Sherer, Deb Brubaker, John Schrock, Anne Berry, or Dan Schrock).
