Summary
I’d like you to meet Rose Kingston.
Rose Kingston lives in New York City, but that’s not where she was born. In fact, Rose was not born anywhere in the United States. She was born in Monrovia, Liberia, where she and her family once lived comfortably and safely. Rose’s mother worked as a secretary in offices at the nearby port; her father worked as a policeman and detective. Rose, her sister, and her two brothers lived in a spacious house with a backyard. During the day all of them attended school.
But when Rose was nine years old, civil war came to Liberia. This civil war, which raged from 1989 to 1996, was one of Africa’s bloodiest wars, claiming the lives of more than 200,000 Liberians. During the war both sides harassed, beat, and killed people they thought might be helping the other side. The war forced over a million Liberians to flee to neighboring countries.
