Summary

This parable is an illustration of what Jesus had said in Luke 6:20+: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God . . . but woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.” The divide separating the rich man and Lazarus began long before it grew into that uncrossable chasm. God’s comfort, blessings, and peace — God’s shalom — are inextricably bound up with our relationships to each other. Jesus invites us to experience them — will we listen?
